Art Summative- Self Portrait

In this project, it started off as me just focusing on the proportions and the facial features of myself, but as I went along I felt myself becoming more critical. I didn’t want to just draw a great nose or a nice eye; I was more trying to make sure that my contours would express the emotion of my face. In this case the emotion that I felt I was trying to portray in my drawing was a happy feeling. This picture was taken at the end of the day, at the sunset, so I am tired, and smiling. Overall I was trying to create a feeling of happiness and the feeling that the day is done. The sunset was coming from the right side of the picture (left hand side of me) creating a difference in the shading of my piece. Also something that I noticed was how in the picture it does not seem that I am looking right at the camera that I am almost peering into the sunset and camera at the same time. It helps you picture what I am seeing. For this project I used pencil as my composition of choice, not because it expressed a certain feeling but simply because I was more experienced with pencil drawing, compared to conte, or coloured pencil. Personally I don’t think coloured pencil would make the feeling of the end of the day, but a gray pencil, shows more darkness and more of a feeling of the end of the day. Overall I have many great things to say about what I did, but then I again there are things I want to completely redo, but I guess that is normal. If I had two positive things to say about my self portrait it would be how well the contrast of the dark hood emphasized the lighter face, which made it pop out, and created a nice light balance in the face. It also created form in my face. Another thing that created from in my face was my contoured lines that ran in a certain direction to show the curves of my face. The second one is I felt that my shading and highlights at the end of the piece were well done, with the smudging in the dark areas, and the highlights in the forehead, cheeks, and the hair. One of the improvements needed in my drawing is that right off the bat I started off with the head straight up and down when it in the picture I was going off, my head was on an angle, making it harder for my proportions to be exactly the same as the pictures. Things that were helpful along the way, were taking the time to stand back from my drawing to see things that I might have missed, and how once you get your proportions you can start detail, not the other way around. I liked how the movement in my lines by the jaw lines, created a curved feeling, and helped direct the viewer’s eye. I felt that my proportions and shapes of my facial features were overall well done (respectively proportionate). Overall I felt that my lines and values varied in terms of darkness, lightness, smudging, and highlights, giving my piece a special contrast.
